How to Choose the Right Mattress: The Complete Mattress Buying Guide

The Mattress Buying Guide

While your bed frame establishes the look of your bedroom, your mattress has a much more direct impact on your everyday comfort. A mattress shouldn't be chosen purely because it's expensive or popular — different people have different sleeping positions, body types and comfort preferences, and the right mattress is the one that's right for how you actually sleep.

Consider Your Preferred Firmness

Mattress firmness is one of the first things to consider. Some people prefer a softer, more cushioned feel, while others prefer a firmer sleeping surface with more support — there's no single firmness level that's perfect for everyone. Your preferred firmness can depend on:

  • Sleeping position
  • Personal comfort preference
  • Body weight and build
  • Whether you sleep alone or with a partner
  • Previous mattress experience

As a general guide, customers who prefer a soft mattress are usually looking for a plush, cushioned feel with more contouring around the body — particularly appealing to side sleepers, who often appreciate additional pressure relief around the shoulders and hips.

A medium or medium-firm mattress offers a balance between cushioning and support, and is often a good starting point for customers who are unsure which firmness to choose. It can also suit combination sleepers and couples with slightly different comfort preferences.

A firm mattress provides a more stable sleeping surface with less sinkage, and is often preferred by back and stomach sleepers, as well as customers who simply enjoy a stronger, more supportive feel.

For customers wanting extra-firm support, we'd recommend looking towards the firmest options in our range. These provide minimal sinkage and a very stable sleeping surface, and may appeal to heavier sleepers or anyone who strongly prefers a hard, supportive mattress.

Ultimately, firmness is very personal. We always recommend trying different comfort levels in person where possible, as the same mattress can feel different depending on your body weight, sleeping position and previous mattress experience.

Consider Your Sleeping Position

Your sleeping position can also influence which mattress feels most comfortable — though it's a useful starting point, not the whole story. We never recommend choosing a mattress based on sleeping position alone.

Side sleepers — we generally guide customers towards our softer to medium options. When sleeping on your side, more pressure is concentrated around the shoulders and hips, so a mattress with enough cushioning and contouring can help these areas settle comfortably without feeling excessively firm. (Cloud, Charcoal, Feather — Cloud and Feather are new arrivals, coming soon)

Back sleepers — our medium to medium-firm options are often a good place to start. The aim is to find a balance where the mattress comfortably follows the natural shape of the body while still providing enough support through the lower back and hips. (Graphene, Comfort)

Stomach sleepers — we generally recommend trying our firmer options. A surface with less sinkage can help prevent the hips and midsection from dropping too deeply into the mattress, which may make the position feel more comfortable and supported. (Heritage, G328, S312, Coconut)

Combination sleepers, who regularly change position through the night, often find a medium or medium-firm mattress the most versatile starting point — enough cushioning for side sleeping, while maintaining support on the back or stomach. (3D, Graphene, Comfort)

Body weight matters too. A softer mattress can feel considerably firmer to a lighter person, while the same mattress may feel much softer to someone with a heavier build — which is why we encourage customers to actually lie on several mattresses rather than choosing purely from a firmness label.

There's no single "correct" mattress for every side, back or stomach sleeper. We use sleeping position as a starting point, then consider body type, pressure relief, support, and — most importantly — what actually feels comfortable to you.

Think About Mattress Size

Your mattress should work with both your bed frame and your available bedroom space. DUVISIONS CASA offers mattresses in a range of sizes, including Single, King Single, Double, Queen and King, as well as different specifications and firmness options. Before ordering, always confirm that your mattress and bed frame are compatible.

Don't Choose a Mattress Based Solely on Price

A mattress is something you use every night, so comfort and suitability should be major considerations. Instead of asking "What's the most expensive mattress?", a better question is "Which mattress is right for me?" Look at the construction, materials, firmness, support and intended feel of the mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right mattress? Consider your sleeping position, preferred firmness, comfort preferences, mattress size, and the type of support you require. If possible, try different mattresses in person before making your decision.

Is a firmer mattress always better for support? Not necessarily. Firmness and support aren't the same thing — a mattress can be firm without providing the right support for your body, or supportive while still feeling relatively soft. The right choice depends on your body weight, sleeping position and personal comfort preference.

What warranty comes with a DUVISIONS CASA mattress? Choose whichever firmness suits you best — every DUVISIONS CASA mattress comes with a 15-year warranty, excluding general wear and tear from use.
